Müpa Filmclub: Annie Hall (1977)
The 50th Academy Awards in 1978 had very little in the way of surprises: Annie Hall collected four Academy Awards in the script, lead actress and best picture categories. And although Woody Allen did not win an Academy Award for his acting, the Best Director award went to him. (Star Wars lost out, just as Steven Spielberg failed to win an Academy Award for Encounters of the Third Kind.) It was a nice, big success. Even in the business sense. Perhaps even more importantly, with this film Woody Allen has moved up a class. It's respectable, even though the Brooklyn comedian slagging himself off is just him doing what he has done so far.

Annie Hall is a superb stand-up in which the anecdotes and Jewish jokes somehow outgrow themselves. Well, this "somehow” is the secret of the film, because the rise and fall of a relationship, of love, is not such an overwhelming story. It is said to have happened before. Except that Annie Hall performs a rare stunt. On the one hand, because it is infinitely personal. And that doesn't just mean that Allen is showing off his roles, his life in it. It's more like something where the protagonist of our story is both inside and out. An observer and enjoyer/sufferer of his relationships. On the other hand, because the dialogue, the ripostes, are really witty. (The lines from this Woody Allen film are those quoted most often.) Thirdly, because it is a declaration of love - for a city, New York. Fourthly... Let's not list them all! Because Annie Hall evokes and displays emotions that would be fairly difficult to describe professionally. Nowadays, 45 years after its birth, it is perhaps even more difficult. How on earth can we understand in our screen solitude that love, human attachments, are not phenomena that can be understood and analysed coolly. There are many, many other people within them, the strangely twisting world, the memories, the prejudices. And even the city...
