After a long walk to a lighthouse on a small cliff overlooking the sea, two not very trusting guys arrive on duty: an experienced old man (Willem Dafoe) and his rookie assistant (Robert Pattinson), who used to work as a woodcutter. Their desires, fears, the suggestive environment and, of course, loneliness have a growing impact on their minds, which cathartically determines the relationship between the two men.
