HERO AND VARATION, Atilla Grandpierre talks to Kristóf Sánta:
If we really care about music, we have to address the question 'what is music really?' at its root, where we also ask 'what is life really?' The relationship between life and music can be understood from two starting points. If the Universe is not alive, then music is nothing more than a psychophysical phenomenon: a combination of physical sound waves psychically interpreted and endowed with human meaning. In this conception, music is a functional phenomenon, entertaining, pleasing, boring. But if the Universe is alive, music is consequently vital: it helps us to experience and feel the eternal power of feeling of the Universe living and feeling in the natural laws of life, it teaches us to live, it lifts us out of the treadmill that makes us grey and worn out, it gives us strength and gives us the power to find ourselves. Ancient, natural man has always sought to live in a cosmic stream of feeling saturated with vitality, certainty and freshness. Nor is there any reason in our own time to belittle our own lives by treating things of cosmic significance as relative and contingent. If we look at and understand music in its original value, in its original purity, we can look into the heavens, we can regain the lost sanctuary of our souls, we can learn to speak to the mysteries of existence, we can taste the fruits of salvation, we can feel what it means to truly live.

Converted from a coal-mining ship, the A38 is easily Budapest's most unique concert venue. The belly of the ship has been home to a wide range of live and electronic music for almost 20 years, and when it's full you can feel the rhythmic movement of the partygoers making waves in the Danube. Foreign acts often refer to it afterwards as their favourite club.
