Johnny is an unfortunate mixture of a self-destructive loser and a genius, a kind of street urchin or, more accurately, a pub philosopher, an irredeemably bitter and cynical sexual predator, living aimlessly in 1990s England. An intellectual fatalist in a world of fatalists.
"My feelings about Naked are as ambivalent as my feelings about the chaotic world of the late 20th century and as likely to be ambivalent as the film itself. I hope this film is as funny as it is sad, beautiful and repulsive, compassionate and outrageous, responsible and anarchic. I really don't want to comment on this film "ex cathedra", I'd prefer it to speak for itself" - Mike Leigh
"I've just seen a film several times, Mike Leigh's Naked, and I realized how dixie the character who plays the lead role is. I've often wondered how to explain to a 20-year-old today who didn't know Dixie what the big deal was, that there was a guy who sat around every party talking, what made it so interesting. Now I've realised: look at Naked, you'll see a character there who looks a lot like Dixie in certain respects..." - László Garaczi
Mike Leigh's film won the Grand Jury Prize at Cannes in 1993, and David Thewlis won the Best Actor in a Leading Role.
