Diary of Anne Frank / The sculptor

2024-02-16T18:00:00.000Z

Thirteen-year-old Anne Frank, a Jewish girl hiding in Amsterdam with her family from the German occupiers, started keeping a diary on 1 June 1942. Her plan was to use her notes to write a book about the war, painting a true picture of the years of German occupation in the Netherlands. The book was never completed and Anne Frank died in the hell of the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp shortly before her sixteenth birthday. Her diary is a poignant and timeless read for anyone who wants to better understand what happened to families in hiding during the Hitler era. The basic work, which has been adapted in many different ways, is now being presented in a one-man opera version by Grigori Frid at the Budapest Operetta Theatre.

Schedule

The second half of the two-part evening will feature The Sculptor. This is a one-act dance piece by László Dubrovay, a deserving artist, Kossuth Prize winner and Erkel Ferenc Prize winner, inspired by a piece written by József Gáli. The director and choreographer of the piece is Balázs Vincze, Gyula Harangozó, Zoltán Imre and László Seregi Prize-winning ballet artist, choreographer and artistic director of the Pécs Ballet, who has been awarded the Hungarian Golden Cross of Merit. Although there are classical elements, it will be a modern ballet, a truly "contemporary" performance. The protagonist of the story is the Sculptor, who cannot overcome his creative crisis - he wants to find a new style and new challenges, but is unable to get over his old self. But then he finds a muse who inspires him and from then on he is able to create again... At the heart of the play is creation, crisis, the destruction of the old, inspiration, rebirth and, of course, love: all the things that are present in everyone's life, without exception.

Location

Budapest Operetta & Musical Theatre

The institution is a two-tiered, true musical folk theatre, which stages Hungarian operettas and their contemporary successors, contemporary Hungarian musicals, along with several literary-historical musicals for youth. It plays around 500 performances a year to nearly 400,000 spectators, making it one of Hungary's most visited theatres today.

It is recognised worldwide as the only operetta sung and performed by Hungarians, with its dynamic music, passion, fire, acrobatic dancing, rich visuals and stunning sensory-emotional storms. When the Budapest Operetta Theatre premiered The Queen of the Cards in Germany, the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung wrote: "There are many places in many cities where you can listen to good music. There is only one sure address for the operetta: Budapest, Nagymező utca 17."

The company tours regularly abroad, having performed operettas, musicals and gala performances in countries from Europe to Asia. In the autumn of 2011, the Budapest Operetta Theatre won the exclusive German-language rights to perform Beauty and the Beast, a musical based on one of the world's most beautiful fairy tales, in a close international competition. The Superbrands and MagyarBrands award-winning institution regularly organises prestigious international music competitions.
