Oláh Kálmán septet
Kálmán Oláh is an extremely versatile jazz pianist, composer, arranger and teacher, a prominent figure in contemporary Hungarian jazz, who masterfully combines elements of jazz, folk music and contemporary classical music. He is an associate professor at the Liszt Academy of Music, where he teaches piano and composition. The style of the Kálmán Oláh Septet is best described as contemporary jazz, with a strong emphasis on 20th century compositional music, especially the Baroque sound.

The sound of the Oláh Kálmán Septet - besides a creative style rich in spontaneous ideas - is based on well-formed compositions consisting of several parts, sometimes based on classical musical forms. The excellent soloists of the orchestra (Kristóf Bacsó - tenor saxophone / flute, Mihály Borbély - clarinet / bass clarinet / tárogató, Kálmán Oláh jr. - soprano saxophone / alto saxophone, Ferenc Schreck - trombone / baritone horn) and the rhythm section (József Barcza Horváth - double bass, Elemér Balázs - drums) combine with highly creative, sometimes collective improvisations and unique, modern compositions to create a truly innovative, 21st century chamber music.
The orchestra's repertoire is made up of projects in a variety of styles. In addition to the now well-known jazz compositions of Kálmán Oláh, the ensemble includes pieces inspired by Hungarian folk songs collected by Bartók and Kodály, new interpretations of themes by Thelonius Monk, fresh instrumental reinterpretations of popular songs by Pál Gábor S. - The Gabor S. Pal Songbook, as well as chamber orchestra versions of larger symphonic works by Kálmán Oláh, such as the Chamber Concerto for Septet, or Sketches of Pangea, written for the 15th anniversary of Müpa Budapest, whose new version, reworked for septet, will be performed for the first time at the Hungarian House of Music.
