Françoise GILOT: Felszálló Főnix

2023-12-07T23:00:00.000Z  -  2024-02-03T23:00:00.000Z

Françoise Gilot was an outstanding artist and an extraordinary human being who became a legend in her own lifetime, leaving us with an inescapable intellectual legacy. In addition to her work as a painter, which spanned eight decades, she wrote numerous books on art theory, published and illustrated books of poetry, taught at university, and designed sets and costumes for dance performances. Her versatile and cultured personality captivated her surroundings and her presence filled the space around her. The sobriety, elegance, formal solidity, vibrant colours, dynamism, witty motifs and mythical symbols of his works are the outgrowth of a fully self-identified, multi-layered personality.

The Kunsthalle exhibition is the most comprehensive presentation of the artist's work ever staged in Europe. From the very early works representing the beginning of his career to the late works on paper from 2016, Gilot's major periods, themes and series are represented. Highlights of the oeuvre such as his dramatic self-portrait from his early days with Picasso, one of his first lithographs at the legendary Mourlot workshop in Paris, his monumental floating canvases of the 1980s, and the pieces of his seminal series of the 1990s, The Wanderer, are shown together again after a long period of time. The exhibition is also a tribute to his moving friendship with Endre Rozsda, an extraordinary relationship that has been the source of Gilot's love and attachment to Hungary and his presence on the Hungarian art scene in recent decades. As a testimony to the latter, almost the entire collection of the Kunsthalle is made up of works on loan from private Hungarian collections.
