The Oak - Heart of the Forest
Oak trees have played a significant role in European culture for thousands of years, they have been revered as the tree of the gods by many peoples, and their dignified appearance, furrowed bark, characteristic leaves and canopy have given them a special place in the hearts of nature lovers in our country. Hikers may not realise that oaks provide a habitat for so many animals. Its trunk and branches are home to squirrels, birds and beetles, and its roots are home to mice and fungi. Its fruit provides food, and the surrounding undergrowth provides roosts for passing wild boars, hedgehogs and foxes. The tree is the survival of many animals, its canopy providing shelter from inclement weather and predators. The oak protects and gives, becoming the central figure of the forest.
