What has made the mythological figure of the child-killing monster mother a source of inspiration for an endless stream of adaptations? The conflict between the human and the witch, the protective mother and the deceived woman, the inner struggle between reason and passion has been a source of creative imagination for 2500 years. Examples from a wide range of artistic disciplines offer a wide range of interpretations of the anxieties manifested in the figure of Medea, from the castration complex working with the fantasy of the archaic destructive mother, to the phobia of the alien based on the image of the parasitic stranger, to the fear of an encounter with the Real which threatens total disintegration of the self. The lecture is a selection of these, some of which are glimpsed in the readings of Medea.
