The clip: a tool for communication or image?
The All for the Eye! series shows the most visible, and one of the least visible, sides of the music industry to a wider audience: those responsible for the spectacle of the performers. From pyrotechnics to hairstyling, styling to band photos, make-up to music videos, the series is a conversation with the professionals who have shaped the way we look at our favourite music artists over the last decade.
In the first part of cultural journalist Adrienn Csepelyi's Pop Free University, the focus is on the clip makers, with two video director guests, Dóra Szelei and Zsombor Vitó. The former has directed clips for Saya Noé, Babé Sila, Ivan & The Parazol x Carson Coma, among others, while the latter is a frequent director of Azahriah and Hundred Sins, but also Wellhello, Desh and Lil Frakk.

What role do music videos play in the career of an artist today? How much money does a good video make, how much does it make - and what makes it good? How much of an artist's revenue can a well-captured video generate? In general: should clips be measured in financial terms, or do managers think of them more as an image-building investment? How does a director specialise in music videos? How do you turn a funny, twisted, abstract idea into a short film that everyone knows? What inspires a director - and what are his or her professional favourites? We seek answers to these and similar questions with two of the most prominent figures in today's video-making scene.
◖ Adrienn Csepelyi ◗
Adrienn Csepelyi graduated as a popular music journalist at the Almost Famous Rocksul, has been working as a cultural journalist and publicist since 2008.She was awarded the Junior Prima Award in 2013, has worked for Népszabadság and Népszava as a cultural columnist, and has been a WMN author since 2018. His show Popfilter was launched in 2017 on Klubrádió and has been a podcast on WMN since 2019. Since 2023 he has been a TV critic for Élet és Irodalom.
◖ Dóra Szelei ◗
Dóra Szelei began her studies in directing at the BKF Film Production Department (now Metropolitan University) and continued her studies at the Famu Master's Degree in Directing in Prague. Her graduation film is UCCU NEKI! was awarded 3rd place in the documentary category at the Pázmány Péter Film Festival in 2014. He has made a lot of video clips, and Balázs Fehér, Jamese, Babé Sila, Kati Wintermans, Diana Goldberg, Saya Noé, Ivan & The Parazol and Carson Coma have all appeared in front of his camera. In addition to making music videos and commercials, he has been working for two years on the documentary Soundtrack of Tomorrow, a documentary about the creative collaboration between Co Lee, Aminon, Blaize and the community and subculture of Wavy Budapest, which will be released in spring 2024.
◖ Zsombor Vitó ◗
Zsombor Vitó started making videos with push-button phones at the age of nine, started a YouTube channel in 2012 and has gathered more than 70,000 subscribers. In the meantime, he fell in love with the technicalities of video production, mastered the skills of making moving images, and decided that he wanted to direct music videos once his desire to be a solo artist had passed. Around 2017, he started taking on clients and working as a video director from 2019, and by 2021 he had a serious crew and had been involved in almost half of the Hungarian new wave rap music scene. In 2019, he produced Azahriah's first video (for OYE with Hundred Sins), and he still works with them today, but he has also worked with Wellhello, Desh, Young Fly, AKC Mishi, Kretta, Filo, Miller David, Lil Frak, Kolibri, Kise, Nasiimov, and Khaze.
