This exhibition is a kind of summary and retrospective. It presents a characteristic group of works from the most important artistic periods: early prints and pencil drawings, plate covers and oil on cardboard. The paintings in which Szurcsik's characteristic motifs appear, such as the trap, absence, walls, human relationships, and moulded mythological compositions.

Schedule

Particular emphasis will be placed on recent works, such as landscapes, black and white images and the pages of the Bestiárium Humanum. In addition to the two-dimensional works, a selection of the artist's sculptures will also be on display. The aim is to show the multifaceted creative process that has characterised József Szurcsik's work over the past forty years. It is very important to see that, although the artist is most concerned with the relations of the individual, the scale at which he thinks is not at all individual: rather, he looks at individual possibilities, mistakes and bad decisions from a position of transcendence. This attention is archetypal, iterative, almost cosmic in scale. The gesture of showing, of paying attention, is the gesture he wants to help us to make our decisions generously, focused on each other, instead of individual, selfish thoughts. This is his magical ability.

Location
