"Imre Benkő is an outstanding representative of contemporary Hungarian documentary photography. He has worked as a press photographer for part of his more than six decades. Yet his work is not the usual photojournalistic oeuvre. All of his periods are characterised by a systematic pictorial reflection over long decades, in a large number of photo essays, spanning historical periods. His photographic work speaks with profound empathy to the life situations of the 'man in the street' in any part of the world. His documentary photography is in the best traditions of photography, yet always recognisable and unmistakably individual." Miklós Gulyás
