On the occasion of the death of beloved Kansas-born editor Arthur Howitzer, Jr., the editorial staff of The French Edition (a widely distributed French-based American magazine) gathers to write an obituary. Four stories from Howitzer's memoirs are brought to life: A travelogue from the Bicycle Reporter about the city's dodgy districts; "The Concrete Man", about a psychopathic painting criminal and the woman who guards him, his muse, and pushy art dealers; "Amendments to a Manifesto", a chronicle of love and death in the shadow of the barricades at the height of a student uprising; and "The Police Captain's Private Dining Room", a suspenseful narrative of drugs, kidnapping and the art of eating.
