One of the most striking performances of OPERA's Slavonic season 2023/24 is Boris Godunovia by Mogest Petrovich Musorgsky. This work of Russian opera, based on Alexander Pushkin's drama of the same name, returns to the Opera House after more than twenty years, and in the light of the ambition and tradition of recent years, this is the original version. In other words, not in the Rimsky-Korsakov transcription and orchestration that many are familiar with and most often performed, but in the original Musorgsky version, which carries much more tension and a more condensed plot. Thus the play focuses even more emphatically on the psychological state of the characters: Musorgsky paints his characters with nuanced musical characterisation. András Almási-Tóth's direction and interpretation blend the historical period with the present, turning the romantic-historical work into a contemporary psychological thriller with elements of horror, in which events take place in several timelines simultaneously.

Hungarian State Opera

The Hungarian State Opera House is the only theatre in Hungary with a large company, specialising in operas and ballets. The building is one of Budapest's most important 19th century monuments. It was built in neo-Renaissance style according to the plans of Miklós Ybl. The richly decorated interior was designed by renowned Hungarian artists, including Mór Than, Károly Lotz and Bertalan Székely.
