“A gray house on the edge of town has barely been standing for ages,
but at its base still flickers a shabby, old tavern.
There they gather, like filthy debris washed up by the water,
the bar crowd, who tear at their fate and whose fate tears at them.
Who asks for one more round, though he doesn’t know why, and drinks when there’s nothing left to drink,
and Pál Futaki drank there too, at the Kapufa Kricsmi.”
Pál Futaki, a bar musician who has seen better days, spends his life—not exactly full of twists and turns—vegetating amid the smoky surroundings of the Kapufa Presszó in Kőbánya. One evening, however, the Devil walks through the pub’s door and challenges him to a game of chance: if Pál wins, he can be freed from his hopeless fate; if he loses, his soul belongs to the Devil. Lacking a better plan, he accepts the challenge, but the consequences affect not only him but also his former lover and those around him, and it slowly becomes clear that more is at stake than he thought.
Pál Futaki and the Devil is a darkly humorous epic, a musical tragicomedy, and a fable for adults rich in absurd twists, exploring the eternal dilemmas of fate, decision-making, and taking responsibility.
