Participation in the workshop requires the purchase of a programme ticket (HUF 2,500), available online or at the Budapest Gallery ticket office. The programme ticket also includes admission to the exhibition.

The workshop is held in English. A few days before the event itself, the artist and the team of Budapest Gallery will send out a detailed email for those who registered with all the practical information.

There will be several short breaks and one longer lunch break during the day. Please bring your own food and beverages, but there would be also a possibility to have lunch in the nearby restaurants. Tea, water, fruits and snacks will be provided by the organizers.

Please also bring your own yoga mat, blanket, pillow and wear thick socks and warm clothes.

The event takes place within the framework of the exhibition My Heart is Crying Inside – Grief Works and is supported by Flanders in Hungary.

Playing Dead: somatic workshop with Anaïs Chabeur, on rehearsing gestures of deathcare

Playing Dead is an embodiment workshop on mortuary care stemming from field research and experience. It offers an opportunity to explore gestures of deathcare in an environment centered around presence, consent and transparency with a slow, poetic and informative approach. It can be thought of as a training, a rehearsal as well as a participative or performative artwork.

The workshop builds on different propositions to get acquainted with the acts of washing, grooming and dressing the dead. Participants will be given a brief, situated and critical history of mortuary care in Belgium and France; a series of somatic exercises that gently enable them to tune into the practice; and a simple framework with demonstration and clear step by step instructions to follow. Three roles are outlined : Dead, Washer and Passeur*, which allow the participants to choose their involvement. Playing Dead provides a container to share stories and questions about physical contact with the dead body. How this tactile intimacy might transform a process of grief and a relationship with death. Playing Dead seeks to think of the corpse through a lens of agency and vibrancy.

*The Passeur is akin to the psychopomp in (Greek) mythology, it is the figure that accompany the dead to death and in our case, brings them back to life. The Passeur watches over the Dead and also assists the Washer in their task of care.

Anaïs Chabeur is an artist, researcher and Palliative Care volunteer based in Brussels. She is currently working on a two year research project at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts Antwerp titled « Visions for Crossing ». Anaïs Chabeur works with films, in situ installations, performative objects, and workshops. Her practice cultivates a quality of presence that opens intimacy with materiality and finitude. She creates sensorial encounters where events, gestures, and objects reveal their vibrancy. Care is central to her work, shaping spaces of exchange between the intimate and the collective.

Anaïs Chabeur graduated from La Cambre in 2016 and was a HISK laureate in 2018. She had solo shows at V2Vingt, Botanique, Atelier Arthur Rogiers (Brussels). Group shows at Krupa Art Foundation (Wrocław, PL), KZN museum (Pietermaritzburg, ZA) Brussels Generation, S.M.A.K. (Ghent), De Singel (Antwerp), Wiels (Brussels), CIAP (Hasselt).
