On the occasion of the death of the beloved Kansas-born editor, Arthur Howitzer, Jr., the editorial staff of The French Edition (a widely distributed French-based American magazine) gathers to write an obituary. Four stories emerge from memories of Howitzer: a travelogue by the Bicycle Reporter about the city’s seedy neighborhoods; “The Concrete Masterpiece,” about a psychopathic painter-criminal and the woman who guards him—and is also his muse—as well as pushy art dealers; “Amendments to a Manifesto,” a chronicle of love and death set against the backdrop of a student uprising and in the shadow of barricades; and “The Police Captain’s Private Dining Room,” a suspenseful tale of drugs, child abduction, and the art of dining.
