23rd Verzió Documentary Film Festival
Seeing is believing? VERZIÓ returns this November!
This year, we explore what it means to watch documentaries in an age when artificial intelligence, deepfakes, and manipulated content increasingly make us question whether we can trust what we see.

Schedule
From November 16 to 25, the 23rd Verzió International Human Rights Documentary Film Festival will bring more than 80 films to Budapest’s Toldi and Művész cinemas, as well as eight venues across Hungary: Pécs, Szeged, Szombathely, Veszprém, Miskolc, Debrecen, Kecskemét, and Szolnok.
The festival opens on the evening of November 16 at Trafó with Papa, a Hungarian documentary set in Budapest’s 8th district, which won the Best Documentary Award at this year’s Magyar Filmszemle. The film also connects to one of the key focuses of the 23rd Verzió: this year, special attention will be given to films portraying the diversity of Roma communities, as well as works by Roma filmmakers.
Alongside the Hungarian and international competition programs, the festival will spotlight issues shaping public discourse around the world today:
- colonial legacies,
- the ecological crisis,
- the war in Ukraine,
- social taboos, and
- efforts to fight violence against women.
The program also features films that push the formal boundaries of documentary filmmaking.
As every year, you’ll also have the chance to meet plenty of filmmakers and invited experts at Verzió!
