200 Hundred Years of Photography // Book Launch
In 2026–27, we celebrate 200 years of photography. To mark this milestone, Thames & Hudson has published a richly illustrated volume This Is Photography: The First 200 Years that was released worldwide this year - the Hungarian edition is published by Scolar Publishing. The editor of the book, Nathalie Herschdorfer will visit Budapest, where she will be joined by Nóra Winkler for a conversation exploring the history of photography.

The world’s earliest known photograph, View from the Window at Le Gras by Joseph Nicéphore Niépce, was created in 1826–27, marking a defining turning point in the history of visual media. Over the two centuries that followed, photography reached numerous technical and artistic milestones, fundamentally transforming the way we see, remember, communicate and understand one another.
2026/27 marks the 200th anniversary of photography. To commemorate this milestone, Thames & Hudson has published a richly illustrated volume, released worldwide this year and published in Hungary by Scolar Publishing under the title This Is Photography: The First 200 Years.
Nathalie Herschdorfer, editor of the volume and Director of Photo Elysée in Lausanne, will visit Budapest at the invitation of the MOME Photography Centre and Scolar Publishing to officially present This Is Photography. In conversation with Nóra Winkler, she will guide the audience through the two-hundred-year history of photography, highlighting ten of the book’s 275 illustrations and exploring how these images have shaped our understanding of the world. The discussion will also offer insights into the artistic and technological evolution of the medium, as well as consider what gives a photograph its power today, in an age of constant visual overload.
