For nearly twenty years, Béla Szakcsi Lakatos—a jewel of the Hungarian jazz scene who passed away in 2022—performed at the Harmónia Jazz Workshop’s season-opening concerts. We dedicate this season opener to his memory, featuring his two sons, each shaping this immense musical legacy in their own unique way. Neither the younger Béla nor Robi felt compelled to live in their father’s shadow; both have earned a well-deserved reputation through their own strength and talent—exactly as their father would have wished.
SZAKCSI JR, or BÉLA LAKATOS SZAKCSI Jr., is a dynamic, inventive, and captivating exponent of the bop piano style. “The Szakcsi Jr. Trio’s performance is a refined and elegant masterpiece on stage. Their tone is inventive, their playing technically flawless, confident, and completely unified. Their music reflects an exceptional talent for improvisation. They are, without a doubt, outstanding and extraordinary musicians,” writes Leila Fitt, a Romanian journalist.

Pianist RÓBERT SZAKCSI LAKATOS is an incredibly talented artist who is equally at home in the worlds of classical music and jazz; Since 1995, he has won numerous awards at music competitions—including the awards for best pianist and best soloist in Kraków, as well as first place in the solo piano competition at the 2000 Montreux Jazz Festival. At the 2005 Avignon Jazz Festival, as a member of the Bolla Quartet, he won the award for best soloist. Jack DeJohnette, one of the many jazz giants with whom he has played, said of him: “I think Róbert is one of the best young pianists on the jazz scene today.” According to another former collaborator, John Patitucci, “(Róbert’s) tone and touch are extremely refined and very lyrical.”
BOTH PIANISTS WILL BE JOINED BY THE FOLLOWING GREAT BAND:
The rhythm section features some of the best young musicians: SÁNDOR SUKE on double bass and TAMÁS FAZEKAS on drums. Their guest is the outstanding saxophonist KRISTÓF BACSÓ (along with Zoltán Zana), who took first place in 1999 at Bartók Radio’s 2nd Jazz Talent Contest. He has performed in Europe, America, and Japan, as well as with Eddie Henderson, Patitucci, and Jeff Denson, among others. In recent years, he has produced sensational contemporary music with his own band, Triád. Kristóf heads the Jazz Department at the Liszt Academy of Music.

The Szakcsi brothers, Béla Jr. and Róbert, are the sons of the late Béla Szakcsi Lakatos, Hungary’s greatest jazz pianist. Both are extraordinary talents; neither needed their father’s prestige to become top players on the piano. This evening, they pay tribute in their own unique ways to Béla Sr.’s tremendous musical legacy.
