Part and whole

The exhibition *Part and Whole* explores the tension between fragments and wholeness: the unique universes composed of pieces, breaks, gaps, obscurations and transitions. The paintings and sculptures relate to this system of relationships in some cases formally, in others conceptually – emphasising both the autonomy of the details and their embedding within the whole.

The paintings in the exhibition reflect on the experience of fragmentation in various ways. The surfaces of the works are often layered, disrupted, and at times convey divergent narratives. In some works, the disintegration of form takes centre stage, whilst in others, the whole is constructed through subtle, more intimate connections between the details. The line, as a basic unit, becomes both a constructive and a disruptive element: it creates networks and structures, whilst also hinting at their instability. The blurred elements or magnified details of the works emphasise absence and weightlessness; the narratives of the images often hover at the intersection of tangibility and inaccessibility. The viewer’s gaze is compelled to move constantly: whilst immersing themselves in the details in an attempt to reconstruct the whole, the whole always eludes complete understanding. Through their physical presence, the sculptures further reinforce the exhibition’s central question. The works often exist in a state of equilibrium: they are constructed from elements whose relationship is fragile, threatening to disintegrate at any moment. In other instances, as the viewer moves through the space, they perceive the relationship between the part and the whole, and the structure of the sculpture, from ever-changing perspectives.

‘Part and Whole’ offers an open conceptual and visual system: a space where absence, fragmentation and uncertainty are not the opposites of wholeness, but its indispensable conditions.
