On the outskirts of a small American town, in a forest just a few meters from the family homes, a spaceship lands, and strange-looking "little people" emerge to explore the area. But soon the earthlings arrive on the scene: making a mad racket and shining their flashing flashlights, they frighten the peaceful visitors, and as they try to surround their spacecraft, the strange little creatures flee. One of them, however, is left behind by the departing spacecraft. And that someone is none other than E.T., who remains on this unfamiliar planet in the company of angry dogs, bustling vehicles, and a strange little boy. That night, a boy living nearby, the elementary school student Elliott, suspects that someone is hiding out in their backyard. He stays out all night and eventually coaxes this someone out, who is, of course, none other than E.T. The two lonely beings—the boy raised without a father and the abandoned alien—become friends, and Steven Spielberg immortalizes this friendship in one of the greatest box office hits of all time.
