I WANT TO DO IT WELL – an improvisational self-awareness workshop on performance anxiety

What happens to us when we want to do something well?

Schedule

We start paying close attention to ourselves, trying to figure out what’s expected of us. We look for the right answer and try to avoid mistakes—and in the process, we often find it harder to access the very things we actually know.

Performance anxiety doesn’t just show up during exams or on stage. It can arise during a presentation, an important conversation, a new situation, or even when we simply want to make a good impression.

In this one-day workshop, we’ll explore what happens to us when the stakes are high in what we’re doing. How does our attention shift? How do we deal with our mistakes? When does control help, and when does it start to get in the way?

Improvisation is a particularly good tool for exploring this: there are no pre-written “right” answers, yet we must constantly make decisions and take action. Through games and improvisation exercises, we’ll experiment with how differently we can function when perfection isn’t the goal.

The workshop alternates between psychological insights, improvisation exercises, and group reflection. The goal isn’t to eliminate anxiety, but to gain a better understanding of how we function and to open up more possibilities for how we respond in situations that matter to us.

No prior improvisation experience is necessary, and you don’t have to be good at improvising. Here, improvisation is not a performance but a tool for self-awareness.

The workshop will be led by Sára Boncsér, a psychologist, communication and applied improvisation trainer, and improvisational actor with more than 15 years of experience in team development. The company

She works at the intersection of corporate training, self-awareness processes, and stage improvisation: using the tools of applied improvisation, she helps develop presence, the ability to connect with others, spontaneous problem-solving, and tolerance for uncertainty. She has been a member of the Grund Theater company since 2011.
