In the 1983 film Videodrome, working on the boundary between body horror and sci-fi, the master takes the manipulating effects of mass media under his scalpel: a television station proudly sacrifices the fundamental dogmas of moral values on the altar of satisfying the audience's most base desires. This could only be topped by a pirate broadcast that infects minds constantly hungry for new stimulation like a virus. What video culture was back then is the internet today: with chilling prescience, Cronenberg foresaw that the extremes appearing in the pirate broadcast are accessible on a much wider scale and with playful ease in the age of the internet.
