Schedule
After the economic, political, and cultural expropriations of the past decades, Hungarian society has arrived at the beginning of something new. Social groups that have long been exploited and marginalized are trying to exist in various ways within a seemingly new system, imagining new realities where folk and national cultural symbols are no longer the building blocks of Fidesz’s mythology and hate campaigns. Is there an opportunity to reinterpret, reclaim, and expand our symbol systems related to national identity, and can we play freely with them once again? How can we reclaim them?
The exhibition Fluid Identities, Post-Hungarian Realities explores these possibilities. It brings together works and artistic attitudes that approach the themes of national symbols and identity through gestures that push the boundaries of social roles, cross limitations, or queer them. The presented works hover between reality and virtuality, speculating on approaches to the shared dimension of our collective consciousness, memory, interpretation, and imagination. Through the gallery space and accompanying programs outside of it, the exhibition encourages thought and action, sometimes utilizing the tools of irony, and at other times, embodiment. Here, it is not only the artists’ imagination that matters, but also that of the visitors: let us dare to rethink what belongs to all of us!
