The PerformanszBusz is heading back to Homokhátság this spring—the last one was so great! The stops will be the same as in October, but we’re trying out a new order and dramaturgy.
Participating artists and partners: Katalin Bitó & Sasu Korom / Piramis Dance VFSE & Zsófia Tamara Vadas & Viktória Varga / Zsófia Rebeka Kozma & Imre Vass / Gergely Lajkó & Csaba Toldi & the SVUNG research group / Katalin Kisapáti & Zsófia Szász
With this project, we travel to different regions of the country, where we engage with local communities on shared issues through artistic events. The goal of the journey is to exchange experiences and initiate dialogue on topics that, though experienced differently, affect us all. In May, our journey takes us to Southern Hungary, where drought, as a pressing public concern, accompanies us throughout the Homokhátság region.
Departure: in front of Trafó at 9:00 a.m.
In Pusztavacs, at the geographical center of Hungary, Zsófi Rebeka Kozma and Imre Vass will evoke the infamous Peace Festivals of the 1980s through a joint performance and set out in search of Hungary’s true center.
In Zsombó, Katalin Bitó and Sasu Korom dance a choreography exploring the consequences of human intervention in a setting that appears idyllic yet bears witness to ecological challenges.
In Bordány, at the Kisapáti Farm, we explore the theme of solitude with choreographer Zsófia Szász, who is transforming her solo piece *Lágymagány*—which was presented to great acclaim at the Under500 and NEXT Festivals—into an unconventional duet in collaboration with Katalin Kisapáti.
In Jászszentlászló, we’ll engage deeply with the distinctive landscape of the Homokhátság region and its transformations during a guided walk led by water management activist Csaba Toldi, livestock farmer and ethnographer Gergely Lajkó, and the SVUNG research group.
We conclude the journey in Kiskunfélegyháza at the former Fáraó Disco, where the Piramis Dance VFSE acrobatic dance troupe is preparing a special performance this time in collaboration with dancers and choreographers Zsófia Tamara Vadas and Viktória Varga.
In the fall of 2025, Trafó, in collaboration with Studio ALTA in Prague, launched a new initiative titled PerformanszBusz to travel to different regions of the country, where we engage with local communities and partners on shared issues through artistic events. The goal of the journey is to exchange experiences and initiate dialogue on topics that, though experienced differently, affect us all. The performing artists and the “traveling audience” set off together on the bus. Events take place on the bus itself, but the program focuses on the stops and the encounters. The trip takes a full day, and we’ll return to Budapest late in the evening.
The PerformanszBusz project was originally launched in the Czech Republic (organized by Studio ALTA) with the aim of drawing attention not only to the capital but also to performing arts platforms, institutions, and creative initiatives operating in various regions of the country. For the Hungarian implementation of PerformanszBusz, Trafó won the grand prize of the Art Explora Europe Award, supported by the Art Explora Foundation and the Académie des Beaux-Arts.
