Ethiopian, Armenian and Swedish folk music influences are brought to contemporary jazz in a duo concert by the sensational young singer Sofia Jernberg and British pianist Alexander Hawkins, which can best be described as a postmodern song cycle. Jernberg creates a dramatic mood out of restraint with her stunning vocal technique, in dreamlike harmony with her virtuoso partner Alexander Hawkins, one of the most creative pianists of his generation and keyboardist Mulatu Astatke. The two artists perform at the most prestigious venues and festivals, including the Pierre Boulez Hall, and Jernberg is a shooting star: he has sung Pierrot Lunaire with Klangforum Wien, appeared with the Vienna Philharmonic, made his solo debut at the Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg last year and most recently staged two new works as artist-in-residence at the Bimhuis in Amsterdam.
