The orchestra, which has been in existence since 2002, plays improvisational chamber music inspired by Balkan, Far Eastern and African musical cultures, but with influences from medieval music, European folk music and contemporary music in the more rigorously structured pieces.

Their name is also their ars poetics, since the Indian word Ek-tar means one-string: the five musicians try to blend together in phrases, melodic variations and rhythms as if they were really playing on one string. Szabolcs Szőke plays the 14-stringed Balkan stringed instrument called gadulka, while Dániel Váczi plays the wind instrument he developed, the glissotar, which is present in harmonious interaction with the other instruments in both the compositions and the free improvisations.
