Frank Rosolino & Conte Candoli: Conversation

Trombonist Frank Rosolino and trumpeter Conte Candoli are selective and inventive masters of their instruments, usually associated with the West Coast style, but with a lot of lasting impact beyond that. Listening to them on their 1975 Munich club gig on the album Dialogue, we get the feeling that the golden age of jazz has never ended. Thanks to their decades of musical history together, they sometimes anticipate each other's ideas, chasing each other around like boys, their joy in making music is all-pervasive, and even the slow songs are performed with a light-hearted sense of humour. Rosolino's big-arched and witty improvisations are reciprocated by Candoli's trumpet with equal spirit. The even mood of the album is also due to the fact that, apart from the Sonny Rollins opening number, the themes were all written in the early forties, musical stage hits that have become jazz standards. The members of the Dutch-German rhythm section are worthy companions of the two American legends, with Rob Pronk on piano, who later conducted the Metropole orchestra.
