The BUDAPEST PHOTO FESTIVAL, Hungary's largest photography event, will open its 7th edition with a special and provocative exhibition on 31 March 2023 at the Kunsthalle in Budapest. The festival and the Kunsthalle are collaborating to present a selection of the life's work of the rebel figure of contemporary Czech photography, Jan Saudek, featuring his baroque, sultry, hand-coloured sensual nudes and spectacular scenes.

In the 1990s, Jan Saudek became known worldwide for his erotic paintings combining the worlds of painting and photography, evoking the studio atmosphere of the dawn of photography, the shabby-walled, tiled atelier and the aniline-painted image. Throughout the exhibition, the world of Jan Saudek is not without its controversies, and will be presented by prominent artists and public figures. The exhibition is organised in collaboration with the Czech Centre.

In 2023, in addition to Jan Saudek's star exhibition, a series of special events will be launched to mark Budapest's 150th birthday, with the festival's contemporary Hungarian photography exhibition focusing on the capital. From mid-April, the Kiscell Museum will provide a visual response to how photographers see Budapest today: the city's past and present, its atmosphere and the people who live in the city. Also with a capital city theme, an open-air exhibition in the City Hall Park, traditionally linked to the Spring Festival programme, will show portraits by four contemporary artists entitled Faces of Budapest. The Petőfi 200 commemorative exhibition explores the contemporary image of Petőfi and how the poet's figure and work relate to contemporary Hungarian photography, while Fresh Meat, an increasingly popular annual exhibition of talented people under 35, offers an opportunity for intergenerational dialogue. The collaboration between the Robert Capa Centre, a flagship institution of photography, and the BPF will again this year provide an exciting opportunity to showcase Hungarian photographers through the "BPF Screening Nights" series of creative talks, with activities including a photo book fair, professional portfolio review and family photo marathon. In addition to its in-house produced programmes, this year the PhotoFest will also place great emphasis on the accompanying events of the capital's galleries showcasing the best of Hungarian photography and cultural institutions presenting international trends. With a spring buzz inside and out, the Budapest Photo Festival will publish its detailed programme of 50 exhibitions on its website from 25 March:
