Maria Faust Jazz Catastrophe: 3rd mutation (EE / DK)

2024-10-16T18:00:00.000Z

Estonian saxophonist and composer Maria Faust, who lives in Denmark, founded her band Jazz Catastrophe more than 10 years ago, originally as a modern big band. Their latest album captures the band's third incarnation: Faust's concentrated, stripped-down new compositions are performed in trio, with the bandleader's alto saxophone complemented by the playing of two long-time allies.

Their album Moth, released in May, is inspired by the mysterious creatures of the night, which are attracted to light for reasons still unknown. The album revolves around the often deadly lure of artificial light, which seems to override the moth's own will - drawing bittersweet parallels with human behaviour. However, the compositions are about the dynamics of relationships born under the Left Star, rather than death and fall. The stripped-down, heartbreaking music can sometimes hurt, but we are unable to turn our backs on it.
