Warsaw Village Band
"Remember the past, but let the future live" - the Warsaw Village Band quoted Burning Spear on their album Uprooting. This is not just a catchphrase, as the "Warsaw Village Band" has always sought to bring together urban and rural culture, past and future, archaic and modern instruments, and the Eastern and Western worlds. These call words may sound clichéd in world music today, but the Warsaw Village Band uses them in a truly native way, as their main thrust, trance, demands.

Since its inception in 1998, it has consistently cultivated "the tradition of the next generation", combining archaic folk instruments - the cimbalom, the reel drum, the frame drum and the "suka" violin dating back to the 17th century - with dub electronics or hip hop. Their charm lies not only in the unique instrumentation but also in the powerful female vocals. All they have to do is throw on an ancient melody, then they "latch on" and improvise with its motifs until they "fly away with it". On Nord they turned northwards - with the cult Swedish band Hedningarna - and on their latest album Sun Celebration they followed the sun, with Galician Mercedes Peón, Iranian Kayhan Kalhor, Indian Ustad Liaquat and Dhoad Gypsyes from Rajasthan, infusing the spiritualism of Sufi music into the trance of Warsaw. Irresistible and beating like the sun.
