Schedule
In 1914, a period began in Europe where human life often did not matter, where the machinery of war wreaked indiscriminate, merciless destruction. It was in these ominously bleak times that one of the greatest chamber music works of the 20th century, the Duo for Violin and Cello, Op. 7, was composed for two stringed instruments. Kodály was 32 at the time.
The first movement alternates pithy, sometimes wild motives with lyrical, tender themes, while in the second movement the composer builds on a folk song, full of uncertainty and pain, resembling a lamentation. It is the movement that best expresses the fear that comes from the anticipation of war. Of the third movement, Kodály himself writes: "I wanted to reflect the spirit of the folk song in my music, which means that I have never literally used them in my works." This movement is a so-called stylized folk dance rondo, which is self-indulgent and positive about the future.
During the evening, Géza D. Hegedűs will perform Endre Ady's poems written in these ominous times.
As an introduction to the programme, Zoltán Kodály, Béla Bartók and Zsigmond Móricz will recite their 1938 protests against Jewish laws, joined by 59 prominent scientists, intellectuals and artists.

Óbudai Társaskör
Óbudai Társaskör is located in the old center of Óbuda in the neighborhood of the Royal Palace. The renovation of the neoclassic historic building – whose history goes back to ancient Roman times – was completed in 1988 by Ybl Prize winner Katalin Korompay. In the two decades since then it has become an acclaimed institution of the cultural and social scene of Budapest and even Hungary.
Óbudai Társaskör is home to the Budapest Strings, the Franz Liszt Chamber Orchestra, the Anima Musicae Chamber Orchestra and the Budapest Ragtime Band. These bands and orchestras perform at our programs regularly.
Classical music often mingles with literature in our programs – be it poetry or prose. However, the reverse is also true, music is a well received guest at literature evenings, book and audiobook launches.
