FINISCASTS' WEEK World City. Artificial lights and lighting in the 19th century | Family Day
We bid farewell to the World City with a family day. Artificial Lights and Light Crafts in the 19th century.
Schedule
Urban society became a society of artificial light during the 19th century. With evolving means of lighting, man gradually and ever more effectively took possession of the night. Artificial light expanded the use of space, boosted reading, facilitated transport, made working hours more flexible, decorated buildings, opened the way for the entertainment industry, and led to a new way of life: it transformed the rhythm of life.
For a long time, the world - as light was called in the first half of the 19th century - supported nightlife in the form of artificial flames. Focusing on these flames, our guided tour will seek to answer the question: how did sleepy cities at the beginning of the century become world cities by the millennium, and who provided the flames?

Kiscelli Museum
The Kiscelli Museum and its 15 hectares of parkland are located in the 3rd district of Budapest, between Óbuda and Remetehegy. The 18th century Baroque church and Trinitarian monastery, built by the Zichy family, was used as a barracks by the army in the 19th century. In 1910 it became the property of furniture manufacturer Miksa Schmidt, who later had it converted into a castle, hence the name Schmidt Castle. It is now home to the Budapest History Museum's collection of Modern Urban History and the Budapest City Gallery, the fine arts collection.
