Orpheus in the world
Authors? Present! series, this time we present a special and unique new production focusing on the legendary figure of Orpheus. According to ancient Greek tradition, Orpheus, the son of Calliope the Muse, was the creator of poetry, whose mythical life is still explored in a wide range of music, fiction and visual art. The evening will include a series of premieres and a discussion with the artists and performers to gain a deeper insight into the rich art-historical tradition associated with the mythological hero.
Schedule
The concert programme will feature four classical music performers and composers. In the poem, the young poetess draws attention to the contradictions surrounding the concept of the muse, which have been present since antiquity. The piece and the experience of playing it together encouraged the musicians to add to the limited repertoire of this rare quartet, and they asked three composers - Máté Balogh, Marcell Dargay and Péter Tornyai - to write songs that in some way related to Orpheus. This connection comes in two ways: on the one hand, through quotations and inspirations from earlier music, such as Monteverdi's or Gluck's Orpheus operas, and on the other, by drawing inspiration from Rainer Maria Rilke's cycle of poems entitled Sonnets to Orpheus.
