DERNIÈRE VOLONTÉ (FR) + CAWATANA (HU) 25 years jubileum concert // INSTANT, Budapest

French band Dernière Volonté is one of the most influential bands in the European post-industrial scene. Their early material from the late 90s combined ritualistic dark ambient soundscapes with massive industrial drums to create a sombre, dark, ominous sound stream. Later on, synthesizers played an increasingly important role, and the increasingly melodic French-language vocals - the powerful drums remained - made the band the creator and most important representative of the military pop style. After that, it became even more refined, the foundations became even more electronic, with the influence of 80s new wave/coldwave/minimal wave music coming into focus.

Live, these two latter worlds meet, the minimalist electronic foundations are complemented and completed by dynamic live drumming (thanks to the vocalist of the well-known French gothrock band Soror Dolorosa, who adds a lot to the atmosphere of the songs with his precise, confident drumming, taking them to a new dimension).

After a relatively long break, they returned to more regular gigging last year, playing at several major festivals (e.g. WGT, Castle Party, NCN), and now they are giving an exclusive concert here in Budapest, after 17 years.

The other protagonist of the evening, Cawatana from Budapest (then still from Békéscsaba) gave their first concert in Békéscsaba almost exactly 25 years ago, on 23 October 1999, at the Night Republic Action festival. In the following period, they released several albums worldwide, toured all over Europe, and after a slightly longer hiatus, they returned to live performances in 2020 with a new line-up and a new set of instruments, featuring analogue synthesizers, drum machines and sequencers.

Their anniversary show will span the last 25 years, from the very first song they wrote to the most recently released and completed songs (which will be heard here for the first time), performed by the founding members, expanding the current line-up with additional instruments, in keeping with the mood of the evening, bringing back the minimal synth, darkwave, post-punk elements that have become common in recent times, as well as post-industrial influences.
