Hogyan mesélhető el gyerekeknek egy erős történelmi referenciákkal bíró történet, amelyben egy fiatal fiú háromszor is elver egy idős férfit? A kérdés magát Dargay Attilát is foglalkoztatta, a válasza pedig minden idők egyik legnépszerűbb magyar rajzfilmje lett. Lúdas Matyi és Döbrögi konfliktusában ott van az örök szegény-gazdag ellentét, ám ennél is jobban kitűnik a természettel és állatokkal harmóniában élő gyermek szembenállása a gőgös, környezetét saját szórakoztatására pusztító úrral, párharcukat pedig Dargay Attila és Jankovics Marcell tette örökérvényűvé.
