In a small village, sometime in the mid-19th century, two families are preparing for the wedding of their children. Everyone is happy, except the two young men who are to be married. Victor and Victoria meet for the first time on the eve of the wedding. At the wedding rehearsal, Victor gets confused about the words of the wedding vows and goes into the woods to practise them. Eventually, he gets so into character that he puts the wedding ring on the root of an old tree.
But the root is not what it seems. Victor has unwittingly betrothed himself to the Dead Bride, whose heart has long since ceased to beat, but he is in constant search of true love and a mate to share his eternal rest.
