Dina e Mel
In the fourth performance of Balázs Weyer's World Village World Music Free University, the focus is on a close yet little-known tradition: the culture and music of the Arberes, accompanied by the music of Dina e Mel.

The theme of the performance is a not so distant, but rather unknown tradition: the music of the Arberians (Arbëreshë in their own spelling, Arberians in Greek, Arvëreshë in Arvanite). The Arberes are medieval Albanians who fled westwards in the wake of the Ottoman-Turkish conquest of the Ottoman Empire in the wake of the Ottoman-Turkish king Skander. They fled to Puglia and Calabria in the south of Italy and Dalmatia in the north.
In both places, these Albanian ethnic communities can still be found today, preserving the medieval Albanian language (now barely interchangeable with modern Albanian) and a handful of medieval Albanian songs. In Croatia, the Arberians live mainly in and around Zadar, where singer Dina Busic - an ethnomusicologist and researcher and performer of the Arberian repertoire - and her partner, guitarist Melita Ivkovic, come from.
The performance will showcase these medieval Albanian songs and how a language and its songs survive centuries away from the mother culture.
