ProTest is a theatrical comedy set in a dictatorial country where a non-violent movement is challenging one of the government's unjustly enacted laws: compulsory conscription. The spectators become members of this movement and together they must overcome the obstacles that roll before them to achieve their ultimate goal: the overthrow of the regime and the advent of a democratic and peaceful world. The game follows the story of 4 young movement members, and as they get to know each other, they must find common solutions to contentious situations to further build support for the movement.
The game is guided throughout by an expert moderator from the Society for Civil Liberties, who not only helps the players to move forward, but also helps them to understand the dilemmas.
The game is inspired by Szrgya Popovich's Guide to Revolution, which features stories of non-violent resistance in modern-day dictatorships over the last few decades. The players are trying to bring about change through peaceful protests, the stakes are whether dictatorial repression can crush the movement or whether non-violent revolution will win. It is up to the players - the spectators.
Örkény István Theatre
The Örkény István Theatre is an independent repertory theatre and one of the most important theatres in the country. Örkény is primarily a prose drama theatre, but our theatre is open to a wide variety of genres. Our repertoire has included more than a hundred works, from antiquity to contemporary works. Regardless of genre, we see the meaning of our work in our choice of high literature, in our careful rehearsals, in our openness to public issues, in our love of humour, grotesque and the many shades of irony. Our ten-year-old theatre education programme was one of the first in Hungary to open up a new channel for active, community-building engagement with audiences.
