Describing the music of Matej Sloboda with one word would be “microscopic”. With that we could even refer to the French spectral composers just as it is declared by the name of their ensemble. But beside this the strongest impact on Sloboda’s microtonal music was his composition master in Berlin, namely Marc Sabat, who deals with microintervals and special tunings himself (as one could experience it a few years ago when Sabat was an invited guest of Trafó and Transparent Sound New Music Festival). Sloboda works with slowly moving music which seems to be static from a distant point of view, but listening to it more carefully one can hear its microchanges. This is how he composes his strong, and especially effective and music that is performed now the very first time in Hungary with EnsembleSpectrum under Slobodas artistic direction. It is important for the festival to present a young and fresh ensemble again at their concert at FUGA, Budapest.
The concert will be preceded by a short workshop, where we can get closer to this genre with the help of Sloboda through some theoretical introduction, so that we can then dive into the sea of the microintervals together.
