Giuseppe Verdi: DON CARLOS

2025-05-16T22:00:00.000Z  -  2025-06-03T22:00:00.000Z

Opera in four acts, in Italian, with Hungarian, English and Italian subtitles

Length: 3 hours 45 minutes, with 1 intermission.

"Spain, 16th century. State and Church engaged in a relentless, destructive struggle to gain control over the people. Every rebellion, every attempt to establish a humane social order is nipped in the bud. The ideals of humanism are doomed to death, and its representatives are burnt at the stake of the Inquisition. The greatest victim is the king's son, Prince Don Carlos. He is the one who dares to love, to dream, to stand up for the freedom of an oppressed people, to defy the state and the church, to overthrow their system of power", writes Frank Hilbrich, the director of the production, and continues. There is no other composer for whom individual freedom was so important. His opera paints a terrifying picture of human civilisation."

Verdi set to music the original Schiller drama, almost every line of which is imbued with socio-political ideas, with an emphasis on individual emotions and spiritual impulses. Frank Hilbrich, a long-established director in the German-speaking world, has gained international renown not only for his contemporary operas but also for his Wagner productions.
