Marjan & Mahsa Vahdat
In 1979, the Islamic Revolution led to a ban on women's singing in Iran, among other severe social and political restrictions affecting women. Years later, two sisters, sisters Mahsa and Marjan Vahdat, decided that they would sing, rejecting the ban that is still in place today.

Their lives are a story of extreme challenges and changes: war, the threat of prison, separation from their homeland and loved ones, migration, exile. Today, however, both Vahdat sisters are acclaimed Iranian singers and musicians, both solo and duo, living in California. Both carry on Iran's rich cultural heritage in their music.
Traditional Iranian melodies and powerful emotions are reflected in their own compositions, which they also combine with contemporary sounds. The complexity and beauty of Persian melodies and poetry in the songs they perform can have a profound effect on anyone.
Their concert, accompanied by the distinguished Norwegian jazz pianist Tord Gustavsen, is part of the House of Music's temporary exhibition LISTEN - Musical Journey Around the World.
