Said Chalaban

In 2022 a new chapter was revealed in the musical life of Saïd Tichiti: with a new name, new resonances, new collaborators he continues the journey that he has started out on two decades ago. In his latest project the ancient Gnawa, Shaâbi and Hassani music is infused with western genres such as dub, funk, or psychedelic rock. Invocating the aesthetics of these modern genres and simultaneously leaving room for spontaneity and experiments he leads the ancient desert cultural traditions towards new horizons. / He unleashes new horizons for the ancient desert cultural traditions.

Said was born in the western part of Morocco as a child of a Berber mother and a sub-Saharan African father. In 1998 he arrived to Hungary, where a year later with local musicians he founded his band called the Chalaban. The music of Chalaban effortlessly blends Afro-Arab and Central European musical influences and instrumentation solutions.

Over the course of their 20-year existence they have published 6 records, performed numerous concerts in Hungary, Europe and Morrocco, and contributed greatly to the popularization of various Moroccan music genres in Hungary and Central Europe.

To top it off, they completed an exceptionally successful one-month tour in North America, covering the most significant cities from New York and Los Angeles to Chicago, Montreal, and San Francisco, all the way to New Orleans.
