Jávai Gamelán

2025-05-17T16:30:00.000Z

We invite you for a cultural refreshment on a Saturday evening, where we will immerse ourselves in a different 'musical' time and space.

During the evening, we will play pieces in the style typical of royal palaces, as well as pieces evoking shadow puppetry performances and contemporary compositions.

A few words about gamelan:

Gamelan is an ancient Indonesian music that is still flourishing today. Its hypnotic sound and melody, unique tempo treatment and multi-layered rhythms have influenced many modern Western composers (e.g. Debussy, Satie, Bartók, Cage, Reich, Glass, Ligeti), but its influence can also be found in pop culture (Lou Harrison, Björk, King Crimson, Aphex Twin).

The gamelan is an integral part of Javanese culture and is present in the everyday lives of the Javanese people, alongside their celebrations and rituals. The oldest texts of the plays are from ancient Hindu times and contain universal wisdom, while the more recent ones present a mood of everyday life.

About the band:

The Hungarian gamelan band "Surya Kencana A" was founded in 2010 and has been continuously working and evolving since then. Its members started their gamelan studies at the Indonesian Embassy in Budapest, and several of them have spent longer or shorter periods as Darmasiswa scholarship students in Indonesia.

For the concert, the young gamelan master Agus Prasetyo will be joined by the orchestra.
