Tryon's bold and traditional big band work is built around the compositions of Kellen Mills. The ensemble combines intricately woven written forms with free improvisation, while balancing classic big band instrumentation with electronic textures and a wry sense of humour. Their music comes to life in the space between structure and spontaneity - in Mills' words, “organised chaos” - and draws inspiration from artists as diverse as Arnold Schoenberg, György Ligeti, Anthony Braxton, Frank Zappa, Charles Mingus and Eric Dolphy. Despite this, Tryon defies genre categorisation and delivers an immersive, unpredictable experience that is at its best in live performance. So far they have released two albums on Double Moon, Läuterung and Freaky Squash Baby, with a third album due out in 2026.
