Helikon issue 2022/4 is inspired by Alain Badiou's theatre: how the making of political philosophy and history in Badiou's terms can be fundamentally theatrical, both a theatre-philosophy and a theatre-philosophy, in the sense of "truth enacted as collective action".

By publishing texts from contemporary French theatre-philosophy, we seek to initiate a rethinking of how theatre-making functions as a form of acting and thinking.

We publish Hélène Cixous's poetic translation of Aeschylus in English for Ariane Mnouchkine's Théâtre du Soleil, and Lacoue-Labarthe's magisterial reading of Rousseau's Letter to d'Alembert, the most significant modern re-enactment of the Platonic rejection of theatre.

The fabric woven from these linguistic, revolutionary, theatrical relations is coloured by the patterns of performative event histories in Magdolna Jákfalvi's study, which draws attention to the linguistic mixing of French Romantic theatrical practice and German Classicist theatrical aesthetics - in the early years of Hungarian national theatre.

The entire issue is based on Aristotle's Poetics, so it is also worth highlighting the place of this influential text in the Hungarian theatre tradition: the issue closes with a discussion with Gábor Bolonyai and György Karsai, who present the publication history of the Poetics.

The texts published in Helikon show what it is like when the theatre is interested in its own history, its own existence.
