The Old Continent Film Club rolls on, and our second stop is misty Albion with a defining animated classic from the 1970s: Watership Down.

Based on Richard Adams’ 1972 novel, this cult-status film holds a special place in British hearts — even if it remains relatively unknown internationally.

Despite its illustration style that might suggest a simple children's film, this is a deeply realistic and raw tale, portraying the harsh struggle of wild rabbits in search of a new home with startling naturalism.

Hazel (Gesztenye) and his younger brother Fiver (Vakarcs) live in a quiet warren. But Fiver begins having bloody visions of its destruction. The warren’s leadership dismisses his warnings, so Hazel gathers a group of believers and sets out to find a new home. Their journey is full of peril and loss, and it’s unclear if enough of them will survive to build something new.

🎬 Before the screening, we’ll be joined by Zéno Mira, who graduated from MOME’s animation master’s program in 2020.

As a designer and director on various animation projects, Mira is deeply committed to visual storytelling and socially engaged themes.

Her 2023 graduation film, Fox Tossing, explores power and vulnerability through a historically accurate — and disturbingly real — animal cruelty ritual.
