Péter Bacsó’s third feature film (released in November 1967, when the director was 42) once again explores the world of youth. The story follows a teacher and a visual artist who purchase the abandoned buildings of a long-defunct internment camp for a ridiculously low price. As they go about their lives, they are forced to confront what happened in that space – the past inevitably seeps into their present.
In a contemporary interview, Bacsó said:
“The cult of personality was also the work of people – and they must bear responsibility for it, even if certain historical circumstances made its distortions seem inevitable. But we can't blame everything on history. What matters today is how we face our past selves. Even if the young woman in my film barely understands what a communist could have felt like – in a communist prison.”
🎵 Two important songs from the film were composed by Cseh Tamás, then only 24 years old.
