Schedule

The genre of film music is as old as cinema itself: even silent films were accompanied by a piano or organ, with the musician sometimes improvising and at other times performing familiar classic tunes. Later, many works originally composed for entirely different purposes became iconic film music. Szilárd Ferenc Kovács, the organist and music director of the Pécs Basilica and head of the Department of Music at the University of Pécs Faculty of Arts, has curated a selection from five centuries of film music, highlighting classical works that played pivotal roles in cult films. For instance, a Bach organ piece featured in the 1934 horror film The Black Cat, while Shostakovich’s famous waltz took on new life in Kubrick’s psychological drama Eyes Wide Shut. The queen of the instruments will also be cast in a new light – quite literally – once again, while the canopy will be lowered to provide a unique acoustic experience to those seated in the gallery.
